Germany suffers a surprising 2-0 defeat at the hands of Slovakia, while Spain glides to victory in their respective matches.
Spain Tops Bulgaria, Slovakia Stuns Germany in World Cup Qualifiers
In a series of thrilling World Cup qualifiers, Spain emerged victorious against Bulgaria, while Slovakia handed Germany a surprising defeat.
Spain started off strong, with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring the opening goal inside five minutes, assisted by Martin Zubimendas. Marc Cucurella doubled the lead for Spain on the half-hour mark, and Lamine Mernio added a third before half time, making it 3-0 in favour of the Spaniards. Luis de la Fuente, Spain's head coach, expressed satisfaction with the team's performance but emphasized the need to continue improving.
Meanwhile, Germany is under pressure in their World Cup qualifying group, having lost both of their matches in June. Their struggles continued as they faced Slovakia, with David Hancko scoring the opening goal and David Strelec, who recently signed for Middlesbrough, doubling the lead. Seid Korac's red card in the second half ended Slovakia's hopes of a draw, leaving Germany in a tough spot.
Belgium also had a successful outing, walloping Liechtenstein 6-0 away in Group J. Youri Tielemans netted twice for Belgium, including a penalty, while Arthur Theate, Kevin de Bruyne, and Malick Fofana also found the back of the net. That result leaves Belgium three points behind group leaders Wales with two games in hand.
The Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland, despite taking the lead through Denzel Dumfries. Matty Cash equalized for Poland with a ferocious late strike, leaving the Dutch still leading Group G on goal-difference, with seven points and a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Turkey secured a 3-2 victory over Georgia. Mert Muldur scored the opening goal for Turkey, followed by two goals from Kerem Akturkoglu, one either side of halftime. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored a late goal for Georgia, but it wasn't enough to prevent Turkey's win. However, Turkey had Baris Alper Yilmaz sent off against Georgia.
In another notable result, Northern Ireland won their World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg 3-1.
As the qualifiers continue, Spain's next game is away against Turkey, while Slovakia is attempting to qualify for a World Cup for the first time since 2010. Germany will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming matches.
