Germany's electric vehicle (EV) sales skyrocketed by 43% in the initial half of 2025, reaching a total of 158,000 units; Tesla, however, experienced a significant drop of 60%, while competitors BYD and MG saw their sales triple.
In the first four months of 2025, Germany has witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) sales, with over 158,000 BEVs sold, marking a remarkable milestone. This growth can be attributed to the aggressive expansion of Chinese brands, which has led to a sharp drop in Tesla's performance, signalling a turning point in Germany's EV market.
The largest successes in this sector were achieved by Volkswagen, Tesla, and Mercedes-Benz, with Volkswagen holding the largest market share among electric passenger cars, estimated around 30-35%. Tesla followed with approximately 20-25%, and Mercedes-Benz held around 10-15% market share. These three companies have dominated the German electric vehicle market in terms of sales volume.
Volkswagen Group registered a staggering 75,195 BEVs during the period, nearly half of Germany's entire electric market. Volkswagen's core brand accounted for 35,118 units, while its sub-brands showed remarkable growth. BMW performed solidly with 17,896 BEV sales, representing 20.8% of its total volume. BMW delivered 13,884 electric cars, and Mini added 4,012 units.
Stellantis registered 10,165 BEVs with mixed internal dynamics. SEAT/Cupra sold 6,505 units, Škoda added 10,258 units, and Porsche grew to 5,978 cars. Renault Group nearly doubled its BEV sales to 5,488 units.
The presence of Chinese manufacturers in Germany's EV landscape is growing rapidly, with a total of 13,264 BEVs sold by Chinese manufacturers. Japanese brands also made their mark, with Toyota leading the way with 1,329 units (+173%), followed by Lexus with 988 units (+252%), and Nissan selling 798 units (+65%).
However, Tesla's German deliveries fell 60% to 6,865 units, and Mercedes-Benz remains under pressure, registering 9,716 BEVs, but its share of electric models fell to 11.7%. American manufacturers sold a total of 9,777 BEVs. Lucid entered the market with 41 units, while Ford showed a impressive 298% increase with 2,871 BEVs sold.
EVBoosters, a trusted executive search partner for powering EV Charging Networks in Europe since 2018, is likely keeping a close eye on this evolving market. Mazda, Subaru, and Honda each registered fewer than 100 electric vehicles.
As Germany continues to embrace electric vehicles, it will be interesting to see how the market continues to evolve and which companies will continue to dominate the landscape.
