Glory Elevator: Marques Mendes Demands Tough Accountability
In a press conference held in Peniche on Sunday, presidential candidate Luís Marques Mendes expressed his concerns about the recent elevator accident at the Gloria. The cable of the elevator snapped, causing an incident that left several people injured.
Mendes commended the responsible attitude of most political agents, specifically praising the PS, its secretary-general, and its candidate for Lisbon City Council. He appreciated their sense of responsibility and maturity in avoiding entering the debate on dismissals and instead focusing on the investigation of the accident.
The former PSD leader highlighted the importance of finding out exactly what failed in the elevator machine, stating that it is crucial to clarify all responsibilities for the accident. He deemed it hasty to speak of dismissals regarding the incident and instead urged for a calm and rigorous inquiry.
Mendes also expressed his concern about the accident, stating that it is a failure of the State that cannot be tolerated. He emphasised that guilt cannot go unpunished and that we cannot impose an idea of impunity.
The event was organised by the Institute +Liberdade, where Mendes spoke to journalists about his concerns and his expectations for the inquiry. He suggested that the investigation should be conducted within a reasonable timeframe to ensure a thorough and accurate understanding of the incident.
Mendes, a candidate for the presidential elections at the beginning of next year, commended the brake shoes of the Gloria elevator for activating, preventing a potentially more serious accident. He concluded by stating that the inquiry should be conducted with the utmost seriousness and integrity to ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens.
