Gmail Users on High Alert: Unraveling the Mystery and Safeguarding Your Inbox
In the digital age, securing our online accounts is more important than ever. Google, recognising this need, has introduced several features to bolster account security, including Passkeys and various security check tools.
Passkeys, a significant step forward in login security, utilise biometric data or screen lock for authentication. This move away from traditional passwords offers improved security, as passkeys are more resistant to common cyber threats such as brute force attacks and phishing.
Google's Password Check tool is another valuable resource for ensuring the security of your passwords stored in your Google Account. This tool assesses the strength of your passwords, checks for any hacks, and alerts you if you're using a duplicate password across multiple accounts.
For users at higher risk of targeted online attacks, Google offers the Advanced Protection Program. This program is open to everyone, not just high-risk users, and provides an extra layer of security. It limits third-party app access and protects against harmful downloads. Sign-ins under this program work only with Passkeys or physical security keys, adding an additional layer of protection.
Adding a passkey to your Google Account is a straightforward process. You'll need your phone, laptop, or tablet to get started.
Unfortunately, even with these advanced security measures, cyber threats continue to evolve. In August 2025, a significant phishing attack campaign targeted Gmail accounts, exploiting Google Classroom between August 6 and August 12. The campaign included five coordinated waves sending over 115,000 fraudulent emails.
In response to such threats, Google provides a Security Check, a quick overview of enabled security features for Google Accounts. This includes information on 2-Factor Authentication, recent logins, and third-party app access. The Security Check also offers tips to enhance account security, helping users stay one step ahead of potential threats.
By utilising these features, Google users can enjoy a more secure online experience, confident in the knowledge that their accounts are protected against a wide range of cyber threats.
