Goa's Premier Eco-Friendly Residence Crafted From Timber Sets New Standards for Eco-Conscious Housing in India
In the heart of Goa, a unique structure named the Timber Residence has been making waves in Indian residential architecture. This 8,650 square foot residence, designed by Architecture Discipline and led by principal architect Akshat Bhatt, represents a departure from traditional construction methods and marks a significant step towards sustainability.
The Timber Residence is more than just a luxury residence. Bhatt aimed to create a structure that could withstand the harsh coastal weather of Goa, including heavy rains, salty air, and occasional typhoons. To achieve this, every detail of the house, from materials to structure, was carefully chosen.
The house features black granite floors and deliberately bare white walls. But the star of the show is the charred-wood exterior, which is resistant to moisture and decay, making it suitable for Goa's harsh coastal weather. Exposing timber beams inside, the house also showcases its wooden structure proudly.
The lower level of the Timber Residence houses a glass-enclosed wood workshop with a timber deck, open to the surrounding landscape without walls or railings. This design choice not only adds to the aesthetic appeal but also encourages a strong connection with nature.
The structure features eleven glulam portal frames, made in New Delhi and transported to Goa. Glued laminated timber (glulam) represents a different construction approach where pieces get stronger when combined. This choice of material was made for its strength, lightweight nature, prefabrication possibilities, and the fact that it stores carbon, reducing its environmental impact.
The Timber Residence's glulam portal frames were engineered to last, ensuring the house remains comfortable and resilient in various weather conditions. Moreover, the focus on sustainability, adaptability, and a lighter environmental footprint sets the Timber Residence apart in Indian residential architecture.
Another unique aspect of the Timber Residence is its adaptability. The structure was designed to be dismantled and moved if needed, making it a truly versatile home. This feature, along with its sustainable design, positions the Timber Residence as the first mass timber home in India.
The Timber Residence in Goa is a testament to the potential of sustainable and adaptable architecture in India. It serves as an inspiration for future residential projects and a reminder of the importance of considering our environment in our building practices.
