Golden states that being a seldom chosen wide receiver in the first round by the Packers does not increase the pressure he feels.
The Green Bay Packers have added a new talent to their roster, with the drafting of Matthew Golden in the first round of this year's NFL Draft. The team also selected TCU receiver Savion Williams in the third round.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst praised Golden's consistency and potential, stating that he has made one or two plays every day during training. Golden's draft moment was particularly special as it took place in Green Bay, with about 200,000 fans cheering before outgoing president/CEO Mark Murphy announced the pick.
Golden, who doesn't have ideal size, listed as 5-foot-11, possesses exceptional speed, with a 40-yard dash time of 4.29 seconds at the combine. This speed was evident from a young age, as he often won races against older children in his neighborhood.
Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed believes Golden will be a dominant player in the NFL. Cornerback Keisean Nixon also praised Golden, stating that he is a "hell of a player," strong at the catch point, with strong hands and a strong upper body. Nixon believes Golden will have a good year.
The Packers have a talented group of wideouts in Reed, Doubs, Wicks, and Watson, with Watson expected to miss the start of the season due to a torn anterior cruciaciate ligament. Golden had a stellar preseason performance with the Packers, including a 7-yard reception that was Jordan Love's only completion against the New York Jets in the Packers' exhibition opener. He also made a 39-yard reception that set up a touchdown against Seattle.
In another preseason game, Golden drew a pass interference penalty on All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner. His college football career had a breakthrough moment when he caught a 28-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-13, forcing a second overtime in the Longhorns' 39-31 Peach Bowl victory over Arizona State.
Golden will be the first Packer ever to wear the No. 0 on his uniform, as he begins his NFL career Sunday against the Detroit Lions. While Golden has kept his goals for the season under wraps, he has the ability to produce a 1,000-yard season eventually.
The drafting of Matthew Golden marks the first time the Packers have selected a wide receiver in the opening round in over two decades. With his speed, talent, and determination, Golden is set to make a significant impact on the Packers' offense.
