In a significant stride towards sustainability, Google has managed to reduce the carbon emissions of its AI systems by an impressive 44 times in just one year. This achievement, which has been confirmed by Google's own data, challenges the common perception that AI systems are unsustainable.

However, it's important to note that this level of efficiency is not yet commonplace in the industry. Achieving such dramatic reductions requires comprehensive optimization, a feat that most companies have yet to achieve.

Google's strategy for efficiency is multifaceted. They batch thousands of queries together for efficiency, use custom chips designed specifically for AI workloads that are 30 times more efficient than their first generation, and run smaller "draft" models to sketch out responses before verifying with larger models only when necessary.

These optimizations, combined with a shift towards cleaner energy sources, have allowed Google to achieve their low energy consumption numbers. When using a narrow methodology that only measures the AI chips on fully utilized machines, Google's energy figure drops to a mere 0.10 watt-hours. For comparison, the energy consumption of a median AI query, such as a Google Gemini text prompt, is equivalent to watching TV for approximately nine seconds.

Water consumption is another area where Google's AI systems stand out. Contrary to previous estimates suggesting AI prompts consumed anywhere from 10 to 50 milliliters of water per query, Google's data shows a much lower consumption. In fact, the water consumption for a median Gemini text prompt is just five drops, less than the amount used in the first second of washing one's hands.

Google's data centers are also remarkably efficient. They run at just 9% overhead above the theoretical minimum, making them almost as efficient as physically possible. While the real production system uses 2.4 times more energy due to the need for redundancy, cooling, and supporting infrastructure, Google increasingly powers their data centers with clean energy, which cuts emissions even when electricity use grows.

However, it's not just about Google. Inefficient AI systems, run by companies that don't optimize their full stack or measure properly, create the problems that everyone is worried about. By focusing on optimization and sustainability, companies can help address these concerns and pave the way for a more sustainable future in AI.
