Government greenlights electricity bill relief for consumers

The German federal government has announced relief measures for electricity customers in the country, aiming to provide tangible relief for consumers. According to Minister of Economics and Energy, Katherina Reiche (CDU), these measures are good news for electricity customers in Germany.

The relief for private households includes a reduction in network charges, which could potentially save families up to 100 euros a year on their electricity bills. However, the relief for businesses in the manufacturing sector and agriculture will be made permanent.

Despite this, the IG Metall union has specifically demanded a reduction in the electricity tax for all consumers. The union has highlighted the potential loss of thousands of jobs in the steel industry and other sectors without the demanded relief. IG Metall union has also emphasized the need for quick implementation of the demanded relief.

Stefan Körzell, a DGB board member, has stated that while the network charge subsidy may reduce electricity prices, a reduction in the electricity tax for all consumers is also necessary. Similarly, Jörg Dittrich, President of the Central Association of German Crafts, has expressed disappointment over the government's decision not to reduce electricity tax for everyone, calling it a "massive breach of trust." Business associations have accused the government of breaking its word regarding the electricity tax reduction.

The IG Metall union has not only called for a reduction in the electricity tax but also an internationally competitive industrial electricity price for energy-intensive industries. Stefan Körzell has also called for federal involvement in electricity transmission networks to ensure a fair and competitive market.

The motion to reduce the electricity tax for all consumers was submitted by the Bund der Steuerzahler Deutschland e.V. (Taxpayers' Association of Germany). Without relief, IG Metall union has warned that thousands of jobs in the steel industry and other sectors could be lost forever.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether the German government will take further steps to address the demands of the IG Metall union and the business community.
