Government is devising a comprehensive strategy
In a significant stride towards improving urban mobility, the city of Brunswick has announced plans to roll out a city-wide strategy for parking space management in 2027. Known as the Mobility Development Plan (MDP) 2035+, this ambitious initiative aims to guide the city's traffic management for the next ten to fifteen years.
Currently, approximately 40 percent of the MDP measures are in progress, with 36 out of 88 measures already underway. By 2035, the city expects to have implemented about 95 percent of the MDP action concept.
One of the key initiatives under the MDP is the expansion of paid parking within the Oker loop, currently in the area of Helmstedter Street. Additionally, the development of district garages is underway, with potential locations including Wenden-West and Rautheim. First cost estimates have been made for these garages, and the implementation process has begun.
The administration has also presented a staggered implementation strategy for the MDP, with an additional 27 measures planned for the next five years. This includes the establishment of district garages, which should also be considered in the further development of existing residential construction.
To ensure the success of the MDP, the city building director, Heinz-Georg Leuer, emphasized the importance of processing measures related to parking within an overall context. City Building Director Andreas Baumann further highlighted the cooperation between the individual measures in the parking garage master plan.
The MDP covers more than just parking management. It encompasses road and rail traffic, public passenger transport, individual motorized and non-motorized traffic, and economic traffic. Two action fields, parking and pedestrian paths, are prioritized in the MDP implementation.
In an effort to improve pedestrian traffic needs, existing regulations are already taken into account in the planning processes. This year, the development of quality standards for pedestrian paths is to be commissioned.
Supplementary investigations and scientific accompaniment are being considered for the Parking Master Plan. However, currently, there are no legal framework conditions for digital parking space monitoring.
An interest survey is being conducted with parking operators active in Brunswick to gather insights and views on the MDP. Moreover, a concept for the university quarter's parking management is being developed and will be implemented in coordination with the management of private university parking lots.
The MDP also includes a standardized and regular parking space demand review. The city administration is committed to ensuring the MDP's success and looks forward to implementing this comprehensive plan for a more efficient and sustainable city.
