Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has called for a ban on prop bets in sports, citing concerns about the potential exploitation of athletes and the heightened risk of abuse associated with these types of bets. The call for a ban comes after an investigation into betting offenses involving two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, which brought the matter to DeWine's attention in 2023.

DeWine has been an outspoken critic of gambling in most of its forms and has previously called for the removal of collegiate prop bets. He believes that prop bets create conditions for the exploitation of athletes and heighten the risk of abuse, not just in Ohio, but across the nation.

In response to DeWine's call, the Ohio Casino Control Commission has already removed collegiate prop bets from the market. However, the current status of prop bets in professional sports is under heightened scrutiny and potential restriction.

The NBA has already taken action by persuading sportsbooks to stop offering certain player prop bets, particularly “under” bets on low-paid players, signaling increased league intervention on this matter. This reflects a broader concern about the potential for player prop bets to facilitate corruption.

However, there is opposition within Ohio’s legislature to banning prop bets due to their popularity with bettors. The Ohio House Finance Committee chair has stated a commitment to protecting prop bets despite DeWine’s push, highlighting an ongoing legislative debate about their regulation.

If banned at regulated sportsbooks, prop bets may continue to be offered offshore or through black markets, complicating enforcement.

DeWine is reaching out to all six major sports leagues in the U.S., including MLB, NFL, MLS, NHL, NBA, and WNBA, to support his proposal and outlaw prop bets. He wants to serve as a catalyst for eliminating the prop betting market from across the country.

The ban on collegiate prop bets took effect in February 2024. DeWine has also made references to recent threats on Ohio athletes and suspensions by Major League Baseball as part of a sports betting investigation.

Thus, the status is currently one of increasing regulation and debate, with some states and leagues moving toward limits or bans, while others resist or seek a balanced approach that protects game integrity without eliminating a popular form of betting.

Sports betting, in its various forms, remains a contentious issue, with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine advocating for the restriction of prop bets in sports. He perceives these betting markets as creating conditions for athlete exploitation and heightening the risk of abuse, a concern that extends beyond Ohio's borders.

Amidst this push for regulation, the Ohio Casino Control Commission has already prohibited collegiate prop bets. However, the status of prop bets in professional sports is under intense scrutiny and potential restriction, with the NBA leading the charge in curtailing certain player prop bets.

Notably, opposition to banning prop bets exists within Ohio’s legislature, with some advocating for their preservation due to their popularity with bettors. This ongoing debate surrounding their regulation has garnered attention from several major sports leagues, including MLB, NFL, MLS, NHL, NBA, and WNBA, as DeWine seeks support for his proposal to eliminate the prop betting market across the country.
