Green Bay Packers Preseason: Taylor Elgersma Shines as Third-String Quarterback Contender

In the Green Bay Packers' preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks, undrafted free-agent receiver Will Sheppard caught a touchdown pass near the midway point of the second quarter, contributing to a 20-7 victory for the Packers. However, the spotlight was on another player: Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma.

Elgersma, who signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May, has been making waves during the preseason. He earned first-team All-Canadian honours in 2024 and a second-team selection in 2023, and his impressive performances have not gone unnoticed. Elgersma is believed to be competing for Green Bay's third-string quarterback spot alongside Sean Clifford and Clayton Tune.

During the game against the Seahawks, Elgersma completed six out of eight passes for 33 yards and one touchdown. He flashed despite limited reps in training camp, and his performance continued to show promise. In the previous two exhibition outings combined, he had already completed 10 out of 15 passes for 133 yards.

Elgersma's touchdown pass came at a crucial time, as the Packers were leading 10-0 at the time. The touchdown expanded the lead, providing a more comfortable margin for the Packers to secure the win.

Elgersma's impressive preseason performances are not a surprise given his impressive college career. He led Wilfrid Laurier to a Vanier Cup appearance and was twice named the Ontario University Athletics Conference's Most Valuable Player. In 39 games, he completed 72% of his passes for 10,230 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.

Sean Clifford, another quarterback for the Packers, also played in the game and completed six out of nine pass attempts for 19 yards. Notably, Clifford had a game-winning rushing TD in an unspecified previous game.

Besides Elgersma and Clifford, the Packers have also included Clayton Tune as a candidate for the third quarterback spot during the 2025 training camp. Tune has physical traits the Packers like and showed promising preseason performances.

As the Packers prepare for the regular season, the competition for the third-string quarterback spot is heating up. Elgersma's impressive preseason performances have put him in a strong position, but the race is far from over. The Packers will be closely watching the performances of both Elgersma and Tune as they continue their quest to find the best candidate for the role.
