Green-conscious bride Milica Lukić marks her nuptials with an eco-friendly ceremony
Sustainable Wedding: Milica Lukić's Eco-Friendly Celebration
Milica Lukić, an environmental activist and researcher at the Faculty of Geography, University of Belgrade, recently demonstrated the power of sustainability by organising a green wedding. Lukić, who is also a member of the WISE Serbia network, chose to celebrate her special day in a way that reflected her commitment to the environment and respect for nature, people, and the community.
Lukić's wedding was a testament to the belief that sustainability isn't about giving things up, but about celebrating in a way that aligns with one's values. She opted for a second-hand wedding dress from Retro to the Rescue, a charity-driven initiative that donates all its proceeds to animal welfare organisations. The dress, which was previously owned, reduced the environmental impact of her wedding and supported a good cause.
The food at Lukić's wedding was entirely vegan and vegetarian, a decision that not only aligns with her ethical beliefs but also reduces the carbon footprint associated with meat production. The wedding bouquet was purchased from a local market, supporting an elderly woman selling flowers and reducing waste by opting for a locally-sourced, biodegradable bouquet.
Lukić's makeup choices were also sustainable. She used vegan mascara and lipstick, products that are not tested on animals, contain no animal-derived ingredients, use natural pigments, and come in recyclable packaging. Her hair was styled at a small local salon, supporting small businesses, especially those owned by women.
Lukić resisted the pressure to buy new wedding rings, viewing gold as a symbol of exploitation and environmental harm. Instead, she chose to continue her eco-friendly practices and opted for second-hand rings.
Lukić's sustainable wedding is a shining example of how one can celebrate life's milestones while minimising their impact on the environment. She hopes to inspire others to adopt more eco-friendly practices in their everyday lives and rethink traditional customs. The jewelry industry, which is linked to numerous ethical and environmental issues including child labor, human rights violations, conflict financing, pollution, and environmental destruction, is one area where consumers can make a significant difference by choosing eco-friendly options.
The cosmetics industry also produces around 120 billion units of non-recyclable plastic packaging every year. By choosing sustainable makeup, consumers can reduce their contribution to this waste and support cruelty-free, eco-friendly products.
Lukić's mindset is about more than just her wedding day. It's about adopting more eco-friendly practices in everyday life and making a positive impact on the world. Her sustainable wedding demonstrated that it's possible to celebrate life's special moments while respecting the planet and its people.
