Grocery retailer plans to expand in NYC despite countering proposal for government-run store by Mamdani's administration.
In the upcoming New York City mayoral race, a crowded field of candidates includes self-identified democratic socialist and New York State assemblymember, Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani's competitors include former governor Andrew Cuomo, incumbent mayor Eric Adams, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, and defense lawyer-turned-independent candidate Jim Walden.
Among Mamdani's policy proposals is the establishment of city-owned grocery stores aimed at lowering food costs. This controversial plan has raised concerns among some members of the business community, including Jamie Dimon. However, it seems to have little impact on the expansion plans of German grocer, Lidl, which has been steadily growing its presence in the city.
As of Thursday, there are nine Lidl stores in New York City's five boroughs, with three new stores opened this year and four more planned for the "near future." Lidl currently operates 190 stores in the U.S., 35 of which are in New York state. Joel Rampoldt, Lidl U.S. CEO, announced that the company will continue to invest in New York and open more stores, stating that they will deal with any changes to their plans if Mamdani's plan materializes.
Lidl is focusing on expanding its stores in the New York Metro, Washington DC Metro, and Atlanta to boost its U.S. footprint. The company's plans to open additional supermarkets in New York City over the next five years have not been altered by Mamdani's proposed platform. However, specific companies other than Lidl itself were not mentioned in the search results as being affected by the mayoral candidate's plans.
Notably, John Catsimatidis, the CEO of grocery chain Gristedes, has threatened to sell or close his business if Mamdani is elected due to the proposed city-run supermarkets. This adds another layer of complexity to the already heated mayoral race.
Despite the opposition to Mamdani's progressive platform, Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, had a friendly phone call with the mayoral candidate last week. It remains to be seen how Mamdani's policy proposals will shape the city's business landscape if he is elected in November.
In the meantime, Lidl's expansion in New York City continues, offering affordable grocery options to residents while the mayoral race unfolds.
