In the heart of Hamm, a significant milestone has been reached with the reopening of Goethestraße on August 4th, 2025. This reopening, after a one-year renovation and rebuilding project, promises to revolutionise the city's traffic situation.

The rebuilding of Goethestraße offers cyclists a swift and secure route from the southern city centre to Hamm City. The project, which took place in two construction phases, was a collaborative effort involving city utilities, the Lippe Association, and various funding sources.

The renovation aimed to improve conditions for safe driving, with approximately 2,400 tons of asphalt installed during the project. Traffic lights were renewed, and a "real" intersection traffic light was installed at the intersection of Goethestraße and Schillerstraße. The Lippe Association even contributed towards the costs for adjusting the manhole covers.

The city of Hamm contributed around 515,000 euros for the expansion and renovation of Goethestraße. The total costs for the project were approximately 2.75 million euros, with around 2 million euros coming from funding.

The reopening of Goethestraße is expected to significantly ease the traffic situation in the city centre. A traffic study conducted before the rebuilding decision showed that car traffic can flow smoothly on one lane per direction. However, it's worth noting that the rebuilding of Goethestraße did not significantly reduce car traffic.

Instead, the rebuilding significantly strengthened bicycle traffic with dedicated bike lanes and separate cycle paths. This provision of much-needed space for bicycle traffic is a welcome boost for the city's cyclists.

Good cooperation between planners and construction companies ensured smooth construction and traffic management throughout the project. The city utilities also used the large-scale project for line work, ensuring that the city's infrastructure remains robust.
