Guernsey's health sector shows considerable advancement

The Health Improvement Commission (HIC) of the Bailiwick of Guernsey has published its Annual Report for 2024, highlighting another year of significant progress and improvement in the island's health and wellbeing.

Expansion of Social Prescribing Team

Plans are underway to expand the Bailiwick Social Prescribing team and identify new referral routes to meet the growing demand. The pilot programme, which concluded successfully, is now a permanent, States-funded service, providing vital support to individuals in need.

Active Transport on the Rise

A survey conducted by the HIC found that 77.7% of respondents had used active transport methods in the last year, a 20.8% increase compared to reports from England. This encouraging trend indicates a shift towards healthier and more sustainable travel choices.

Prevention is Key

Dr Simon Sebire, the Chief Executive, emphasized the growing recognition of the vital role that prevention plays in improving health and economic outcomes. He highlighted the Commission's commitment to promoting preventative measures and partnerships for a healthier future.

Improvements in Children's Lunchboxes

A survey of children's lunchboxes showed significant improvement, with 99% of lunchboxes containing fruit and 50% containing vegetables. This positive shift towards healthier eating habits among children is a promising sign for the future.

HIC's Growing Influence

The HIC's social media followers increased by 15% over the last 12 months, with over 200,000 engagements online. The Commission's website also attracted over 17,300 page views, including 4,600 new visitors, demonstrating the growing interest in the Commission's work.

Successful Partnerships

The 'Prevention and Partnership for a healthier future' conference, hosted by HIC, brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for promoting health and wellbeing. The Commission also collaborated with Hautes Capelles school to establish a food-focused, pupil-led group, fostering a culture of health and sustainability among young learners.

Creative Approaches to Health Promotion

Creative treatments such as films featuring local people who have successfully quit smoking are being shown in public places like GP surgeries and Beau Sejour. These innovative approaches aim to inspire and motivate individuals to make positive changes to their health.

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the successes, there are still challenges to be addressed. The HENRY programme, for example, has a high demand but is limited by staff capacity. Similarly, the 'Counterweight Plus' programme had small numbers in 2024 due to a limited capacity.

Supporting Local Charities

Independence, a local charity, worked with 94 people in its counselling service and 24 new clients in the Criminal Justice Substance Service in 2024. The Bailiwick Social Prescribing programme secured continued States funding and raised an additional £132,574, providing essential support to those in need.

Breeze Guernsey's Success

The 'Breeze Guernsey' programme of free bike rides for women involved 104 riders, promoting active transport and fostering a sense of community among participants.

In conclusion, the Health Improvement Commission's Annual Report for 2024 paints a picture of a Bailiwick of Guernsey that is making strides in promoting health and wellbeing. With continued support from the States of Guernsey, the private sector, and charities, the Commission is well-positioned to continue its work in improving the health and economic outcomes of the Bailiwick.
