Guide for Transferring Music from a CD to Your Computer: Simplified Steps

In this article, we guide you through the process of ripping high-quality music from CDs using Exact Audio Copy (EAC), a free and widely-used program for managing audio on Windows computers. This comprehensive guide was co-authored by Luigi Oppido and Darlene Antonelli, MA.

Downloading and Installing EAC

First, download EAC from the EAC website, ensuring you click the website's download button and not a download button from an ad. Upon installation, also install AccurateRip, CDRDAO, CTDB, and freedb for optimal performance.

Setting Up EAC

Upon opening EAC, navigate to the Drive tab and click Autodetect read command now. Next, go to the Offset/Speed tab. If you have performed the AccurateRip Configuration earlier, the first top half of the tab will be grey. If not, find the correct information for your setup using this page.

Configuring EAC for Ripping

Go to the Gap Detection tab and select Detection method A for "Gap/Index retrieval method", and select Secure next to "Detection accuracy". In the ID3 Tag tab, leave everything unchecked except the last option, "Write cover image into...".

Open Compression Options, go to the External Compression tab and check "Use external program for compression", select "User Defined Encoder" next to "Parameter passing scheme", write in the text field next to "Use file extension.", browse to the file path of the FLAC extension you downloaded with EAC, write next to "Additional command-line options.", check "Delete WAV after compression" and "Check for external programs return code.", select "High quality".

Ripping the CD

Before ripping your CD, click Detect Read Features. Now, go to the General tab and check the box next to "Unknown CDs". If you wish to add album work or CD images from online sources, enable "automatically access online metadata database". Uncheck the box next to "Show status dialog after extraction" unless you want to see this data. Check the box next to "Create log files always in English language."

Go to the Tools tab and uncheck "Retrieve UPC/ISRC codes..." and "Use CD-Text information in CUE sheet generation" according to your computer's specs. Uncheck "On extraction, start external compressors queued in background" and set it to use one compressor thread. Go to the Normalize tab and uncheck "Normalize".

Press F4 to detect gaps before ripping your CD. Now, select the tracks you wish to rip, then go to Action > Test & Copy Selected Tracks > Compressed. Ripping music from a CD to your computer can take a few minutes or a few hours, depending on your CD drive and the condition of your CD (more scratches means there are more errors to fix).

Alternative Ripping Software

As an alternative to EAC, dBPoweramp is a commercial software known for secure ripping, multi-format support, metadata editing, and audiophile-level accuracy. Another free option is CDex, which supports various formats and metadata retrieval. DVDFab DVD Ripper also offers high-quality audio extraction, though primarily aimed at DVDs with copy protection removal features.

On Mac and iTunes

On a Mac, you can import a CD into your music library using Apple Music by clicking "Yes" in the pop-up. On Windows, you can import a CD into your music library using iTunes by clicking "Import CD".
