Guided tour of Rome's Colosseum ends in tragic demise for Italian tour leader
In a tragic incident, a tour guide, identified as Paola Salvatori, collapsed and later passed away during a tour at the Colosseum in Rome on Tuesday evening. The news of her death was made public by the union of tour guides.
Paola, who was 60 years old and had been licensed since 2017, was leading a group of approximately 25 tourists at the time of the incident. The incident occurred on the first floor of the ancient amphitheater.
The state administration of the Colosseum confirmed the incident, stating that the temperatures in Rome, where the Colosseum is located, were still above 30 degrees at the time. The Colosseum, built in the first century AD, can become very hot, contributing to the working conditions.
The high temperatures, coupled with the challenges posed by the historical structure of the Colosseum, have been a point of concern for tour guides. Paola had reportedly been feeling unwell before the incident and had been working in the harsh conditions.
Overtourism is another significant factor contributing to the harsh working conditions reported by tour guides. The Colosseum, one of Italy's most popular attractions, recorded 14.7 million paying visitors last year.
Colleagues have blamed the working conditions, including high temperatures, for Paola's death. Italian media reported that she died of the heat. Despite the efforts of several tourists to revive her, Paola could not be revived.
Paola's death has brought attention to the harsh working conditions in the tourism industry. In a statement, Paola had previously expressed her concerns about overtourism, stating that it is contributing to these conditions.
The union of tour guides has called for improved working conditions, including better facilities to combat high temperatures and a reduction in the number of tourists to manageable levels. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by tour guides and the need for change in the industry.
