Guillermo del Toro's portrayal of "Frankenstein" in Venice leaves Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi moved to tears, receiving a monumental 13-minute standing ovation.
In a spectacular night at the Venice Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro's highly-anticipated adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic horror novel, "Frankenstein," received a 13-minute standing ovation—the longest so far. The gothic sci-fi film, set to release in theaters on Oct. 17 and on Netflix on Nov. 7, is a major awards contender for the streaming giant.
The star-studded premiere saw the attendance of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jessica Williams, Jesse Williams, Sofia Carson, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and the lead actors, Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi. Isaac portrays the titular mad scientist, while Elordi embodies the monstrous creation.
Elordi, who spent a gruelling 10 hours in the makeup chair to transform into the monster, was a crowd favourite. Inside the venue, fans were excited, with someone shouting, "We love you, Jacob!" The actor stopped for selfies and autographs with fans outside the theater before the event. A visibly emotional Elordi received a kiss on the cheek from Isaac during the standing ovation.
Del Toro, who has been following the "Frankenstein" monster story since he was a child, considers adapting it a lifelong dream. Felix Kammerer embodies Dr. Frankenstein's younger brother William in the film, while Mia Goth plays Dr. Frankenstein's fiancée, Elizabeth Lavenza. Christoph Waltz portrays wealthy arms merchant Harlander.
Del Toro's last appearance in Venice was in 2017 with his film "The Shape of Water." This time, he shared multiple hugs with Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi during the standing ovation, marking a memorable night for the cast and crew.
"Frankenstein" is competing for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The 149-minute, $120 million epic could become a significant addition to Netflix's growing list of critically acclaimed films.
