FC St. Pauli Secures Derby Win Against HSV

In a thrilling derby match played at a sold-out Volksparkstadion, FC St. Pauli emerged victorious against Hamburg SV (HSV) with a score of 0:2. The win moved St. Pauli to the top of the Bundesliga table, temporarily, after two games in the 2025/26 season.

The first goal for St. Pauli came in the 19th minute, courtesy of Adam Dzwigala. A corner kick found its way to Dzwigala, leaving HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes with no chance to stop the ball from crossing the line.

The early stages of the game were largely dominated by midfield battles, with St. Pauli appearing more mature and well-rehearsed in their play. HSV, on the other hand, was still waiting for their first goal of the season. Four minutes after St. Pauli's opener, Nikola Vasilj, the St. Pauli goalkeeper, had to make his first serious save from a Muheim free-kick.

HSV's fortunes took a turn for the worse in the 77th minute when Giorgi Gotscholeischwili received a red card. This left HSV with ten men to contend with for the remainder of the game.

St. Pauli gained the upper hand after about 15 minutes, with HSV struggling to create chances in attack. Andreas Hountondji scored the second goal for St. Pauli in the 60th minute, but a potential second goal before half-time was prevented due to a foul against Hountondji in a tussle with HSV defender Jordan Torunarigha.

HSV appeared to have equalized through Ransdorf Königsdörffer in the 49th minute, but the goal was disallowed after a VAR review due to a very slight offside position of the shooter. Yussuf Poulsen and Jean-Luc Dompé were brought on by HSV in the 56th minute to boost their attacking hopes, but they were unable to turn the tide of the game.

Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt is currently leading the Bundesliga table with a 3:1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the second matchday. St. Pauli's derby win against HSV marks their first Bundesliga home game victory after seven years and their first derby win since October 14, 2022.

The derby match was a thrilling spectacle, with 57,000 spectators creating an electrifying derby atmosphere. Both teams started the game with their opening lineups, with St. Pauli demonstrating their superiority on the pitch. The victory is a significant boost for St. Pauli as they continue their pursuit of a strong start to the season.
