"Harry Potter's enchanting theme musically performed by an Indonesian orchestra in the secluded courtyards of a Glasgow university"
The University of Glasgow's cloisters, a Gothic-revival style building connecting the East and West Quadrangles, provided an enchanting backdrop for a unique performance on 6 September 2024. The Indonesian youth ensemble, known as Trust Orchestra, played John Williams' music from the Harry Potter films, much to the delight of the audience.
Despite rumours to the contrary, the performance did not actually take place during the filming of the Harry Potter series. The cloisters of the University of Glasgow were not used in the films, but have been featured in other productions such as Outlander and Cloud Atlas.
Gloucester Cathedral, not the University of Glasgow's cloisters, was used for the Harry Potter films' cloisters scenes. Several other scenes from the Harry Potter films were filmed at Oxford University, Durham University, and Lacock Abbey.
The young conductor of the ensemble, Yechiel Leiter, led the performance with a baton, guiding the flurries of quavers and semiquavers that filled the air. The ensemble members, dressed in gowns and Gryffindor scarves, added to the magical atmosphere.
The theme from The Philosopher's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets were among the pieces played, sending nostalgia waves through the audience. The performance was entirely from memory, a testament to the ensemble's dedication and skill.
The University of Glasgow posted a TikTok video of the performance with the caption "Wonderful to welcome the Trust Orchestra of Indonesia to campus." The performance has since gone viral, with viewers praising the ensemble's talent and the unique setting.
Founded in 1451, the University of Glasgow is the fourth oldest in the UK and the second oldest in Scotland. It also holds the title of having more listed buildings than any other university in the UK, making it a fascinating location for events such as this.
The Trust Orchestra's performance at the University of Glasgow was a magical moment, transporting the audience into the world of Harry Potter for a brief but memorable time.
