In a tragic incident that shook the community of Minneapolis, a shooter opened fire at a Mass attended by hundreds of students at Annunciation Catholic School, located within a local church. The incident resulted in two fatalities - Fletcher Merkel, 8, and Harper Moyski, 10 - and left 18 individuals injured.

As the first police officer entered the church minutes after the 911 call reporting the shooting, parishioners felt a sense of safety and survival. The officer's arrival marked the beginning of a grueling escape for the children and teachers, as well as the start of heroic rescue efforts that would save countless lives.

The children and teachers at the church had followed active shooter safety trainings during the shooting, and their quick thinking and bravery were evident. They protected one another, with some children lying on the floor and covering each other up during the chaos.

The injured were attended to by medical first responders, several of whom had children enrolled at Annunciation Catholic School. One nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center sat with an injured child during a CT scan, providing comfort despite safety protocols.

The community rallied together in the aftermath, with Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara mentioning countless lessons of bravery from young children to elders. City officials reported that 15 children, ages 6 to 15, were injured, along with three parishioners in their 80s. Only one child is in critical condition.

The families of the two children who lost their lives paid tribute to their loved ones. Harper Moyski's parents described her as a bright, joyful, and deeply loved 10-year-old who was adored by her younger sister. Fletcher Merkel's father, Jesse Merkel, spoke about his son's love for family, friends, fishing, cooking, and sports.

In response to this tragedy, the Catholic Church and organisation Moms Demand Action have become actively involved in combating gun violence and promoting measures to protect children and communities, particularly in the wake of the church shooting. Church leaders, including bishops and the Pope, have called for concrete violence prevention, an immediate ceasefire, and support for mental health services.

Jesse Merkel also expressed his gratitude to the adults and students inside the church for their swift and heroic actions that saved lives. The community continues to mourn the loss of Fletcher and Harper, while also finding strength in their collective resilience and determination to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
