Hidden beneath sheet metal for decades, the fate of Leipzig's final "Swastika eagle" was uncovered.
In the heart of Leipzig, a city steeped in history, an iconic symbol of a bygone era has flown away. Over 80 years since the end of the war, the last remaining Reichsadler of Leipzig has vanished.
The Reichsadler, a symbol synonymous with the Nazi regime, was once proudly displayed on a building at Max-Liebermann-StraΓe 59. However, during the ongoing renovation and conversion of the former barracks into a boarding house with 37 units, the eagle has been removed from the building.
Initially hidden behind a metal box, the historic Reichsadler relief was revealed during the 2024 renovation. Regrettably, only fragments of the relief remain, and they no longer suggest the image of a Reichsadler.
The facade of the renovated building will feature a classic punched facade, as per the city's plans. Interestingly, no ornaments or symbols are shown in the facade views of the building application documents, indicating a departure from the building's past.
Elsewhere in Leipzig, changes are afoot. The Christmas Garden in agra Park has been cancelled, and a popular playground has been closed due to an injury risk. These developments, along with the disappearance of the Reichsadler, serve as a reminder of the city's ever-evolving landscape.
A building permit was issued for the renovation of the building in 2024, marking a new chapter in its history. As Leipzig continues to grow and change, it's clear that some of its past will be lost, while other aspects will be preserved and celebrated. The story of the Reichsadler serves as a poignant reminder of Leipzig's complex history, and the balance between preservation and progress that the city must strike.
