High school students in Alexandria City staged a walkout to voice their objections against the ongoing issue of gun violence in educational institutions.

On Friday, September 5th, students at Alexandria City High School (ACHS) held a walkout against gun violence on both the King Street and Minnie Howard campuses. The demonstration was part of a national event and was organised by Titans Demand Action.

The walkout was prompted by a tragic shooting that occurred on Aug. 27 at a Minneapolis Catholic church and school. The incident resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 21 other people, shaking the nation and inspiring students to take a stand.

The walkout began at 11:30 a.m. and lasted less than a half hour. During the demonstration, students participated actively, holding signs, throwing water bottles, and chanting "End the violence!". The event was held on school grounds, with media only allowed to observe from the public sidewalk.

The organiser of the walkout cited data from Everytown for Gun Safety, an organisation committed to ending gun violence and building safer communities. Despite extensive search results, no information was found regarding which organisation supported the ACHS students in their demonstrations against school violence.

It is worth noting that ACHS students are allowed to participate in two walkouts per school year without facing disciplinary action, according to ACPS. This policy allows students to peacefully express their concerns and work towards a safer environment.

Tragically, following the incident in Minneapolis, another life was lost. The shooter killed themselves after the incident. This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the urgency to address gun violence and work towards a future where such tragedies are preventable.

The walkout at ACHS was a powerful demonstration of student activism and a call for action against gun violence. The students' voices echoed across the nation, inspiring hope for a safer tomorrow.
