Historic achievement by MG4 as they introduce the market's first mass-produced electric vehicle (EV) equipped with a semi-solid-state battery.
The British-born automaker, MG Motor, is set to revolutionise the electric vehicle (EV) market with its upcoming semi-solid-state battery MG4 EV. This innovative vehicle will be equipped with a single front-mounted 120kW motor, similar to other MG4 models.
The new battery technology, a manganese-based lithium-ion pack, is supplied by Suzhou Qingtao Power Technology, a global leader in solid-state EV battery development. This partnership is significant, as Suzhou Qingtao Power Technology is backed by MG Motor's parent company, SAIC Motor.
The MG4 EV, in its semi-solid-state battery version, is slightly larger than BYD's Dolphin hatch in dimensions (4395mm long, 1842mm wide, 1551mm tall, and a 2750mm wheelbase). The cabin of the MG4 EV is expected to be similar to the existing line-up, featuring a 15.6-inch floating infotainment screen and smart tech.
Pre-orders for the updated MG4 opened earlier this month, with prices starting at ¥73,800 (approximately NZ$17,200). Final pricing and detailed performance figures for the semi-solid-state battery MG4 EV will be confirmed in September. Deliveries of the vehicle are expected to start by the end of 2025.
The introduction of the semi-solid-state battery marks a significant milestone, as it will be the first time such technology will be offered in a mass-produced electric car. The new battery is anticipated to offer higher energy density, improved safety, and better cold-weather performance.
The MG4 EV, a model produced by SAIC Motor, has been approved for sale in China, featuring a new semi-solid-state manganese-based lithium-ion battery. The MG4 EV, in its semi-solid-state battery version, will be launched globally on a large scale.
Optional extras for the MG4 EV include a 360-degree camera, front and rear radars, tinted roof, privacy glass, and bespoke badging. The current MG4 range in New Zealand spans several trims, offering either 51, 64, or 77kWh packs.
The MG4 EV, in its current form, has CLTC ranges of 437km and 530km respectively, and pricing tops out at ¥105,800 (around NZ$24,700) in New Zealand. The price for the semi-solid-state variant of the MG4 will be confirmed in September 2025.
With the introduction of the semi-solid-state battery, the MG4 EV offers a fresh twist in the electric vehicle market. The MG4 EV remains a hatchback model, but with the new battery, it promises to deliver a more efficient, safer, and longer-range driving experience.
