Historic Growth Imminent for Philippines' Travel and Tourism Industry

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has made a bold prediction for the Philippines' Travel & Tourism sector, forecasting a record-breaking year in 2024. The sector is projected to infuse ₱5.4 trillion into the economy this year, marking a significant recovery from the 14% deficit it faced in 2023.

According to the WTTC, the sector's contribution to the national economy is expected to surpass ₱5.4 trillion in 2024, representing a nearly 25% year-on-year growth and soaring 7.1% above the previous 2019 peak. This growth is testament to the government's efforts in enhancing tourism infrastructure, with ongoing upgrades to regional airports.

The sector's employment is also expected to see a significant boost. By 2024, it is projected that the sector will provide employment for over 9.5 million people, growing beyond the 2019 peak and representing 20% of the national workforce. By 2034, this figure is expected to rise even further, with employment in the sector projected to exceed 11.9 million people.

International and domestic visitor spending are also set to exceed previous records in 2024. The WTTC predicts that international visitor spending will reach ₱715.6 billion, while domestic visitor spending will reach ₱3.7 trillion.

Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the WTTC, leads the global tourism body. Across Southeast Asia, the Travel & Tourism sector is projected to grow by 20.6% in 2024, reaching ₱21 trillion and representing 9.7% of the region's economy. In the Philippines, the sector now represents more than one fifth (21.3%) of the country's economy.

The WTTC's forecast for the Philippines' Travel & Tourism sector is a positive sign for the country's economic recovery. As the sector continues to grow, it is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving the Philippine economy forward.
