Honda Reduces its Racing Legacy
In a unique partnership with UK scale model specialist, Amalgam Collection, Honda Racing Corporation is set to sell a limited run of premium scale models of the legendary Honda RA272 F1 racing car.
The models, available in two sizes – 1:18 and 1:8, have been meticulously crafted to capture the essence of the original car. Genuine car paints and archive colour references were used to spray the bodywork of the 1:8 scale model, while the patterns for the model were created using digital scans from the Honda Collection Hall and hundreds of in-period photographs of the original car during the 1965 season, specifically as raced in the Mexico GP.
Amalgam Collection, known for their unrivalled examples of the world's most iconic and luxurious cars at scale, made using the finest quality materials, travelled to the Honda Collection Hall in Motegi, Japan to get accurate digital scans of the original Honda RA272 car for the model's creation. Each 1:8 scale model is built from approximately 1600 parts including castings, photo-etchings, and CNC machined metal components. The model features an authentic painted livery, hand-built bodywork, and more than 1600 precisely engineered parts.
The 1:8 scale model, limited to just 30 examples, costs US$28,995 (NZ$48,665). On the other hand, the 1:18 scale model, which is limited to 300 examples, is considerably more affordable at US$1,735 (NZ$2,910).
The models will be first available for purchase at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 15. They will also be available during Monterey Car Week, at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 15-16. Online sales will start soon after these events.
Honda describes the model as a "meticulously crafted collector's item." Koji Watanabe, President of Honda Racing Corporation, stated that the RA272 model is more than a tribute, it's an invitation to own a piece of Honda's motorsport history. The fully replicated Honda V12 engine adds to the authenticity of the model, making it a must-have for any F1 racing car enthusiast.
Amalgam Collection's expertise in digitally scanning cars "wherever they are in the world" for accurate replication at scale ensures that the models are as close to the original as possible. Each model will be accompanied by a bespoke display case, certificate of authenticity, and a commemorative booklet signed by Watanabe.
This partnership between Honda Racing Corporation and Amalgam Collection promises to bring a piece of motorsport history into the hands of collectors, offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of the past and relive the glory days of F1 racing.
