Hospital Infant Deaths Labeled as "Outright Murder" by Rahul Gandhi Following Rat Bites in Facility
In a shocking turn of events, the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has expressed outrage over the deaths of two infants due to rat bites in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of M Y Hospital in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The incident, which came to light on Tuesday, saw two newborn babies bitten by rats in the NICU. One infant tragically passed away on Tuesday, and the other on Wednesday. The NCPCR (National Commission for Protection of Child Rights) has taken cognizance of the incident and has sought a report from the Indore district collector regarding the unfortunate event.
The NCPCR has also directed the Indore district collector to submit an action taken report (ATR) on the incident within three days. The Indore-based non-government organization (NGO), Jan Swasthya Abhiyan, has been instrumental in raising health issues and has filed complaints and sought investigations related to this serious healthcare negligence.
Expressing his dismay, Mr. Gandhi described the incident as horrific, inhuman, and insensitive. He accused the Madhya Pradesh government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of negligence leading to the incident. He further stated that a child has been snatched from a mother's lap due to the government's failure to fulfill its most basic responsibility.
Mr. Gandhi has also questioned the government's right to run the administration when it cannot ensure the safety of newborn children. He criticized the government for handing over the health sector to private hands, making treatment unaffordable for the poor.
In response to the incident, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered action on the matter. The exact cause of the deaths, as claimed by doctors, is not rat bites but cognitive issues. However, the fact that such an incident occurred in a hospital setting, where the utmost care is expected, has raised serious concerns.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for improved healthcare facilities, particularly in government hospitals, to ensure the safety and well-being of newborn children. It is hoped that appropriate action will be taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
