Hourly Assaults Soar in Sapporo Region: 500 Incidents in a Day
In the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, several significant events have unfolded over the past few days.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Kyiv to mark Ukraine's Independence Day and attended the signing ceremony for the agreement to jointly produce defense weapons with Ukraine. This move is aimed at bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Schmyhal announced that Ukraine and Canada have agreed to jointly produce defense weapons. The exact details of the agreement are yet to be disclosed.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have reportedly retaken several villages in the Donetsk region, according to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyj. The village of Nowomychajliwka, in particular, has been recaptured.
However, the situation remains tense in other parts of the country. The Russian military has launched a massive drone attack on the cities of Sumy and Romny, and there are no reports of possible casualties as of yet.
In the southern region of Kherson, a 76-year-old woman was injured due to Russian artillery strikes in the downtown area, according to the head of the regional military administration, Yaroslav Shanako. No civilians were injured, but buildings were destroyed as a result of the attacks.
Russian troops have also reportedly captured another settlement in the Dnipropetrovsk region, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
On the diplomatic front, US Vice President JD Vance expressed optimism that the US peace efforts can end the war in Ukraine. US President Trump congratulated Ukraine on Independence Day and supported a negotiated solution that "ends the bloodshed and secures the sovereignty and dignity of Ukraine."
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has arrived in Kyiv for talks with the Ukrainian government. He is seeking an exchange on how Germany can best support Ukraine in a possible peace process, coordinating closely with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The coordination of the peace process in Ukraine over the next months is likely to involve Germany, with earlier mediation efforts involving Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett coordinating with leaders from France, Germany, the USA, and the UK to negotiate a ceasefire.
However, there are disagreements on the peace process from the Russian side. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the "de facto head of the regime," but not a legitimate leader of Ukraine. He also stated that the Kremlin would not accept a peace agreement signed by Zelenskyy, claiming that he is not authorized to sign such a deal.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reports that Russian air defense has shot down two Ukrainian drones approaching the capital. Meanwhile, Governor Ivan Fedorov of Saporischschja counted 327 drone attacks, 166 artillery attacks, four air attacks, and three attacks with multiple rocket launchers within 24 hours in his region.
These developments underscore the complex and evolving nature of the conflict in Ukraine, with both military actions and diplomatic efforts playing significant roles.
