House fire in Richmond Hill results in tragic death of an 11-year-old
In a series of tragic events, the York Regional Police are currently investigating an arson case in Richmond Hill, which has now been classified as a homicide.
The fire, which occurred on Skywood Drive, in the area of Yonge Street and Gamble Road, shortly before 3 a.m. on Sept. 1, left five victims, including one child, in critical condition. Tragically, an 11-year-old girl who was injured in the fire passed away in hospital on Tuesday. Four people were pulled from the home, with at least one found in a second-floor bedroom. A fifth person was found outside the home.
Investigators are still working through video surveillance footage and canvassing the area for witnesses. Arson is now suspected in the case, and the investigation is ongoing with no arrests made as yet.
The police chief, Jim MacSween, expressed his condolences to those impacted by the arson and the tragic loss of the 11-year-old child. He also acknowledged the devastating impact incidents like the arson can have on the community as a whole.
This arson case is just one of several violent incidents that have occurred in the region over the past few weeks. The police chief noted that the region has experienced two fatal shootings, another shooting and home invasion, and an arson.
In the shooting and home invasion in Vaughan over the weekend, 46-year-old Abdul Aleem Farooqi, a father of four, lost his life. The other victims are believed to be ages 70, 59, 42, and another person in their mid-20s. The police chief emphasised that those responsible for these deadly incidents will be held accountable.
Chief MacSween is committed to keeping the community safe and providing support for the victims and their families. He also noted that the gravity of these incidents will not be overlooked and each case will be investigated and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of an 11-year-old child and the other individuals affected by the arson in Richmond Hill. The police chief again offered his condolences to those impacted by these devastating incidents.
