Hungary hinders European Union's endorsement of statement regarding Russian missile assault
The EU member states have united in condemnation of the recent Russian air strikes on Ukraine, issuing a joint statement that denounces Moscow's reckless approach and disregard for international law. However, the statement did not receive unanimous support, with Hungary standing alone in opposition.
The joint statement, published by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on behalf of 26 out of the 27 EU member states, strongly condemns the air strikes as a clear violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also commits to increasing support for Ukraine in all areas and to accelerating work on a 19th package of sanctions against Russia.
Hungary's opposition to the joint statement is linked to the commitment to increase support for Ukraine, specifically in the acceleration of work on a 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The Hungarian government has consistently expressed the view that the EU's punitive measures against Russia are detrimental.
The air strikes in question were carried out by Russia on Ukraine, causing significant damage to the EU representation in Kyiv. The damage has added to the frustration of the EU member states, who are growing increasingly concerned about the escalating conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian air strikes on Ukraine put the lives of diplomats and diplomatic staff at risk, which is considered a violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The joint statement issued by the EU member states is a clear sign of their solidarity with Ukraine and their commitment to upholding international law.
Despite Hungary's opposition, the joint statement represents a significant step forward in the EU's response to Russia's aggression in Ukraine. It is hoped that further unity among the member states will be achieved as the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve.
