Hungary Opposes European Union's Statement on Russian Missile Strike
In a significant turn of events, the European Union (EU) has failed to issue a joint declaration condemning Russia's air strikes on Ukraine, due to the opposition of Hungary. EU Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, could only publish the text on behalf of 26 states.
The declaration, which was not passed in its entirety, pledged to intensify support for Ukraine, including accelerating work on a 19th package of sanctions against Russia. However, Hungary's opposition to the declaration is reportedly due to its argument that EU penalties do more harm than good.
The attacks on Ukraine and the EU representation in Kyiv, which was also severely damaged in the Russian air strikes, are reported in the declaration. The attacks endangered the lives of diplomats and diplomatic staff, which is a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The declaration states that these actions demonstrate Russia's recklessness and disregard for international law.
Meanwhile, in Hamm, there has been a positive trend in housing construction, but the unemployment rate remains high. Summer activities in the city received positive reviews, offering a glimmer of optimism amidst the EU's political turmoil.
The Hungarian government's stance towards Russia is not new. Previously, Hungary and Slovakia have blocked sanctions in the EU, contributing to internal debates on sanction decisions. The Hungarian government's delay in the work on the 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia has raised concerns about the unity of the EU in its response to Russia's actions.
As the situation unfolds, the EU continues to grapple with the complexities of maintaining unity and upholding its values in the face of international challenges. The future of EU-Russia relations remains uncertain, with the EU's ability to act collectively being tested.
