Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner are both on course for a deep run in the US Open after securing their places in the last 16 of the tournament.

Poland's Swiatek, the world number one, will face 13th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round, having beaten Russian Anna Kalinskaya in the third round with a score of 7-6 (2), 6-4. Swiatek's victory at the US Open was her 20th at a Grand Slam this year, putting her on equal footing with world number one Aryna Sabalenka in terms of Grand Slam wins this year.

Swiatek saved four set points during her match against Kalinskaya and the contest was marked by nine service breaks and 67 combined unforced errors.

Meanwhile, Sinner, the 10th seed, overcame a scare in his match against Denis Shapovalov, losing the opening set before winning the next three with scores of 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. Sinner will next face 23rd seed Alexander Bublik, who outlasted American Tommy Paul in a five-set thriller.

Sinner's unbeaten streak at hardcourt majors is now 24 matches, and he will be looking to continue his impressive form in the tournament.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, Naomi Osaka, a four-time major winner, overcame Daria Kasatkina with a score of 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, while Beatriz Haddad Maia, the 18th seed and last year's quarter-finalist, defeated Maria Sakkari with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Haddad Maia will face Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova in the next round.

Three players withdrew from the US Open singles competition on Saturday alone, while nine players have already retired from singles matches before the end of the third round at the US Open this year.

Notable men's matches saw Felix Auger-Aliassime storm back from a set down to upset third seed Alexander Zverev with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-4, while defending champion Coco Gauff dispatched Magdalena Frech with a score of 6-3, 6-1.

In the doubles competition, 45-year-old Venus Williams and Canada's Leylah Fernandez won their debut match as partners with a score of 7-6 (1), 6-1.
