Illegal migrants intercepted: Pakistani authorities apprehend 84 individuals during two seaborne attempts to Iran as part of a trying human trafficking clampdown

In a significant move against human smuggling networks, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan has announced the arrest of 84 individuals in two separate sea-based operations attempting to illegally enter Iran.

The majority of the detained individuals hail from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, with nine from Gujranwala in Punjab province. The group of 24, arrested in the same town, included 11 from Gujranwala, seven from Hafizabad, and six from Sheikhupura, all cities in the eastern Punjab province. The suspects were arrested in Jiwani, a small coastal town in Balochistan's Gwadar district.

These arrests are part of a broader government push against human smuggling, with investigations initiated following their arrest. Four cases have been registered against the arrested individuals. The FIA did not provide a reason for the detainees' intended destination, Iran, but initial investigations suggest that the group of 24 intended to move onward from Iran to other countries.

The government restricted overland travel to Iran earlier this year due to security concerns in Balochistan province. The recent arrests come amid a series of deadly boat tragedies over the past two years in various locations, including Greece, Morocco, and Libya.

Iranian authorities have also ramped up action against undocumented people, citing security concerns tied to its military conflict with Israel, espionage risks, and militant infiltration, particularly in the restive Sistan-Baluchistan province.

Many Pakistanis, particularly manual laborers, seek work in Iran. The arrests are part of a crackdown on these networks, as the FIA thwarted illegal sea travel to Iran and arrested 60 suspects as part of a major operation.

The FIA's efforts are a testament to the government's commitment to addressing the issue of human smuggling, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens. The agency continues to work tirelessly to combat this illegal activity and protect the rights of those who are vulnerable to exploitation.
