Illegal Street Racing Stops in Bremerhaven Due to Police Intervention
In an effort to ensure road safety, the Bremerhaven Police have been actively patrolling the city's streets, particularly on the night of Monday, September 1st. This vigilance led to the apprehension of two high-performance vehicles involved in an alleged illegal street race on Langener Landstraße towards Cherbourger Straße.
The incident, which occurred around 1:15 AM, saw a VW Phaeton and a Mercedes E-model moving at excessive speeds and diagonally offset with a few meters between them. Upon catching up to the speeders at a red light, the police found that the engine compartments and brakes of the cars were severely overheated.
According to the Criminal Code (§315d), illegal street racing is considered a criminal offense. As a result, the 23-year-old driver of the VW and the 24-year-old driver of the Mercedes were both issued criminal charges for illegal street racing. The cars were seized as evidence and towed away.
The organizers of such events are not left unscathed either. Organizing an illegal street race can lead to imprisonment of up to two years or a fine. In a separate incident, a 20-year-old driver was arrested by a traffic policeman in Bremerhaven for driving at 116 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. His vehicle was confiscated, and a criminal procedure for illegal racing was initiated against him.
Participating in an illegal street race also carries consequences. Driver's licenses can be revoked, and up to three points can be added to the driver's license register in Flensburg. Furthermore, if a street race results in personal injury, a prison sentence of up to ten years may be imposed.
The police also emphasize that a single car speeding through the city can also be considered an illegal street race. They warn that such activities are a criminal offense and are punishable by severe fines. The Bremerhaven Police reiterate their commitment to maintaining road safety and urge all drivers to respect traffic laws and drive responsibly.
