Image Focus: Promoting Marine Research at the Sea's Edge
In a display of support for the recent March for Science event, students from the Marine Biology Laboratory class (SIO 136) at Scripps Oceanography embarked on a 12-hour cruise aboard the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul.
The cruise, which took place in the waters off San Diego County, is part of the curriculum for students learning marine biology. It serves as an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with the instruments and processes used aboard oceanographic research vessels.
The photo of the students gathered on the rear deck of the R/V Robert Gordon Sproul, originally posted on Brice Semmens' lab's Facebook page, shows the students holding signs in support of the March for Science. Among them, graduate student Natalya Gallo, who was visible in the back of the photo with a sign that said "Ask Questions, Question Answers".
Brice Semmens, the instructor for the Marine Biology Laboratory class, was also visible in the photo, wearing his signature straw hat. The cruises, which focus on the study of marine organisms, are used to introduce students to the instruments and processes used aboard oceanographic research vessels.
It's important to note that the cruises and the March for Science event were not specifically associated, and the cruises did not take place during the event itself. However, the students' participation in the cruise demonstrated their commitment to scientific research and education.
The search results do not provide information about the researchers involved in the cruises or who are depicted in the Photo of the Week 2017. Regardless, the cruises serve as a valuable learning experience for students at Scripps Oceanography, providing them with a unique opportunity to engage with the marine environment and contribute to scientific research.
