Immigration-linked detentions in Washington D.C. prompt calls for clarification from 7News

In the past week, Washington D.C. has seen a surge in immigration enforcement, with 465 arrests reported since August 7. This information comes from the White House, which is delegating crime crackdown efforts in the city.

The focus of these enforcement actions has been a topic of discussion, with Mayor Muriel Bowser stating that the focus should be on violent crime and that this has been promoted. However, the specifics of the stops and immigration-related arrests remain unclear, as the White House has not elaborated on the nature of these actions.

One incident that has drawn attention occurred in D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood on Saturday. Federal officers stopped an Uber Eats driver, questioning him about his vehicle registration and later his immigration status. Witnesses reported that the driver was taken away by the officers. A passerby asked if the driver was being put in chains.

Several immigration advocacy groups, including CASA, the ACLU, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights, have been contacted for this report, but no information has been provided about how many of the arrested individuals face additional criminal charges beyond illegal immigration. 7News on Your Side is seeking information on how many were arrested for something else before their status was uncovered, as well as how many were taken in solely because of their immigration status.

Of the 465 arrested, 206 people were claimed to be in the country illegally. Some of those arrested face additional criminal charges, including assault and drug-related offenses. ICE's media team only acknowledged receiving the query from 7News.

Mayor Bowser addressed questions about the focus on immigration enforcement, stating that enforcement against violent offenders should be separated from everyday hardworking people who have made the country their home. She emphasised that the city's resources should be directed towards addressing violent crime.

The increased presence of the National Guard in Washington, D.C. has also been a point of concern for some residents. As the situation continues to develop, 7News on Your Side will continue to seek more information and updates on these immigration-related arrests.
