Man with Severe Health Issues Illegally Mobilized and Sent to Fight in Ukraine, Report Says

Vitaly Anisimov, a 42-year-old laborer from Chita, Russia, with multiple chronic illnesses and broken legs, was reportedly illegally mobilized by the Russian military and sent to fight in Ukraine despite his fragile health.

According to reports, Anisimov, who suffered from a rare vascular pathology in his stomach called malformation of the lesser curvature of the cardiac portion of the stomach with multiple gastric bleedings, was mobilized in October 2024. His original medical documents were taken away from his daughter, and he was refused treatment without them while at the front.

Despite his injuries, Anisimov was given a 'G' category (temporarily unfit) and sent to the front. He was then moved to unit No 21250 on crutches, but his condition continued to deteriorate. His legs swelled up and started bleeding due to improperly inserted pins.

In January 2023, Anisimov was hospitalized but was asked to leave by February. He was sent to Ukraine with his injuries and in a wheelchair. His family believes he paid over 100,000 rubles to commanders to get his leave approved. Despite urgings from his family not to return to the unit after his leave, he was taken there without receiving a summons.

Anisimov was threatened with deportation and SOCh (unauthorized absence) if he did not return to the unit. In October 2024, he was urgently hospitalized in the intensive care unit with a gastrointestinal bleed and was given category D (unfit) and sent home to recover. However, he was reportedly sent back to the front without proper medical clearance.

Russian military prosecutors intervened in Anisimov's case after public outcry. They recognized that his mobilization was unlawful due to his medical condition, and as a result, he was reportedly released from active duty.

Anisimov died on May 4th, five months shy of his 43rd birthday. His family paid for his funeral themselves. His daughter, Nastya, is demanding the results of the forensic medical examination and is planning to take the military unit to court.
