Impacts Stemming from Reading
In the realm of Swabian cabaret and comedy, Christoph Sonntag stands as a towering figure, often referred to as the "King of Swabian Cabaret." Born in 1962 in Waiblingen, Sonntag has made a name for himself through his solo performances, radio comedy, and satire.
His latest venture is a column titled "Reading," where he delves into the topics of reading pleasure and literature. In this column, Sonntag discusses subscribing to topics and saving articles, a feature available through a Staatsanzeiger subscription.
Sonntag's love for literature can be traced back to his early years. At the tender age of seven, he was introduced to the works of John Steinbeck, which would later become one of his favourite authors. His mother, an avid reader herself, often told him stories from books in a child-friendly manner.
One such story was "The Street of the Sardines," a novel that made a lasting impression on the young Sonntag. He recalls reading it at the age of 14 or 15, particularly moved by the portrayal of prostitutes and alcoholism. However, his mother omitted these elements from the story when telling it to him as a child.
This early exposure to literature helped train Sonntag to think in images, a skill that is evident in his work as a cabaret artist. In fact, his first school essay, written in the second grade, was about a poodle with a propeller. His teacher, Mrs. Randow, was so impressed that she predicted he would become a book writer.
Despite his love for literature, Sonntag finds it unfortunate that today's children spend a lot of time on their smartphones and have limited connections to books. He often laments the fact that they miss out on the joy of immersing themselves in a good story.
Sonntag, who is known for his technology-hostile stance, is currently considering a novel on his nightstand. As he continues to share his thoughts on reading and literature through his column, we can only wait and see what literary masterpiece he will create next.
