Barmer's Dental Report for Schleswig-Holstein Reveals Encouraging Trends and Regional Differences
In a recent report, Barmer Health Insurance has highlighted some significant developments in dental health across Schleswig-Holstein. The report, released in 2023, sheds light on the current state of dental health in the region, including the number of dental practices, the need for dental treatment, and the prevalence of preventive care.
According to Bernd Hillebrandt, Barmer's regional manager in Schleswig-Holstein, the overall need for dental treatment, dental crowns, and dental prosthetics has decreased. In 2023, only 38.5% of people in Schleswig-Holstein required dental treatment, a decrease from 47.1% in 2013. Among 20- to 24-year-olds, the need for dental crowns and dental prosthetics dropped from 1.4% to 0.8%.
However, a concerning trend has emerged in the decrease of preventive care. In 2023, only 45.7% of Schleswig-Holstein residents underwent preventive dental care, a decrease from 50.1% in 2013. Bernd Hillebrandt emphasized the importance of regular check-ups for maintaining good dental health, along with healthy eating and good oral hygiene.
The report also reveals that the number of dental practices per 10,000 inhabitants in Schleswig-Holstein is approximately 4.0, slightly below the national average of 4.2. The density of dental practices varies by region within Schleswig-Holstein. The city of Kiel has the highest density with 5.5 practices per 10,000 inhabitants, while the district Herzogtum Lauenburg has the lowest density with 3.0 practices per 10,000 inhabitants.
Many dental practice locations in Schleswig-Holstein are concentrated in the urban areas of Kiel, Lübeck, and Neumünster. An even distribution of dental practices is considered important for accessibility, as highlighted by Bernd Hillebrandt.
Bernd Hillebrandt attributes the positive dental health trend to high treatment quality, effective prevention, and better oral care. The report underscores the importance of continued efforts in preventive care to maintain and improve dental health in Schleswig-Holstein.
