Belarus has reopened bear hunting after a near-century ban, with the first round of permit draws taking place recently. The Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen (BSHF) is responsible for issuing these permits, and the Ministry of Forestry has reported an increase in the bear population due to the activities of hunting management bodies, conservation of habitats, and improved feeding conditions.

In the first round of permit draws, a total of seven permits were issued, allowing seven lucky hunters to participate in the bear hunt. A total of over 160 applications were received, indicating a high level of interest in this activity.

Each hunter must pay at least Br5 for the permit in addition to the minimum fee. For Belarusian and EAEU citizens, the minimum fee is Br500, while foreign citizens are required to pay Br1000.

Six people went hunting in the first round, three of whom saw a bear but chose not to shoot due to distance and visibility issues. The BSHF, which will determine the right to hunt through a random selection process from submitted applications, commended the decision not to shoot, stating that it was the right one in this case.

The second permit draw for bear hunting in Belarus will take place on Tuesday, July 15. However, specific details about the second draw have yet to be provided. As of 2023, there are 700 bears registered nationwide in Belarus, with approximately 20 bears planned to be hunted this year.

It's important to note that bears are listed in the Red Book, and bear hunting in Belarus was banned for almost a century. This reopening of bear hunting has sparked debates about conservation and ethical considerations.

For those interested in applying for a hunting permit in Belarus, anyone can do so. The BSHF encourages responsible and ethical hunting practices to ensure the sustainability of the bear population and the enjoyment of this activity for generations to come.
