In a development, the Toronto Police apprehended a juvenile suspect linked to the murder of a professional poker player, following an intense, western-style gunfight.
In a shocking turn of events, the Toronto Police Service's Homicide Unit has charged several individuals, including a 16-year-old, in connection with the death of prominent online poker player Matthew Bergart.
The incident occurred on April 25, 2024, in Toronto's Etobicoke district. Matthew Bergart, 30, was shot dead during a targeted home invasion at a house in the area.
According to reports, three suspects wearing dark clothing and balaclavas broke into the house and demanded valuables before shooting Bergart multiple times. The police described the incident as a situation where a bad decision to do a break and enter was compounded and turned into a murder.
On Monday, a stolen car pulled into the parking lot of a FreshCo supermarket adjacent to the youtube studio where the incident took place. Three men exited the car and began firing at the youtube studio, where a birthday party was taking place.
The police boxed in the vehicle in the parking lot and apprehended one suspect after a foot chase. A further 21 people were arrested inside the youtube studio.
In addition to the 16-year-old, eight individuals have been charged with multiple offenses, including unauthorized possession of a firearm. Staff Sgt. Joe Matthews expressed concern that many of those involved were teenagers.
The owner of the property, not Matthew Bergart, was the intended target of the heist. A GoFundMe page was set up to support Bergart's family, describing him primarily as a musician.
The charges were filed on November 15, 2024, more than six months after the incident. Det. Sgt. Brandon Price stated that they were fortunate that the suspect was caught up in a shootout so that he could be taken off the streets.
The Toronto Police Service continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with information to come forward.
