Singaporean Para Swimmer Toh Wei Soong Prepares for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
Toh Wei Soong, a 21-year-old Singaporean para swimmer, is gearing up for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Wei Soong, who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis at the age of two, a chronic condition that restricts the use of his legs, has already made a name for himself in the swimming world.
Wei Soong started competitive swimming when he was 13 years old, and balancing his swimming and academic commitments has been a challenge, especially at the start of his international competitive career. However, the competition and the act of swimming remain engaging and addictive for him.
Wei Soong's philosophy is simple yet powerful: "If you are willing to beat someone, you must be willing to lose to someone. Only with opponents can you make yourself stronger." This tenacious drive to achieve the impossible has earned him an impressive tally of medals, including a bronze at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and two golds in the 2018 Asian Para Games.
Wei Soong finds freedom and enjoyment in swimming, particularly underwater. He credits his coach, Ang Peng Siong, for being his hero and role model, and his teammates for motivating him and supporting him in the sport. He is also grateful for the support of his parents, who have been supportive of his swimming career and are soon to see him as a student at the National University of Singapore.
Despite the fierce competition at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, Wei Soong looks forward to the challenge. His ultimate ambition is to win a gold medal at the event. In addition to his athletic goals, Wei Soong is also passionate about inspiring others. He will be championing "Equality of Opportunity", working with the Singapore Disability Sports Council as a motivational speaker in their joint school outreach program.
Wei Soong's goal is to encourage youths, especially those with disabilities, to pursue their sporting dreams and to be unafraid to bravely challenge the impossible. In 2019, Wei Soong was one of 12 athletes in Asia chosen by Toyota to champion Start Your Impossible, an initiative that marks Toyota's commitment to provide freedom of mobility for all. The organization that selected Wei Soong for this initiative is Toyota, along with its official distributor Borneo Motors (Singapore).
Wei Soong's next challenge is the World Para Swimming Championships in Kuching, Malaysia, in July 2019. Despite the tiring nature of competitive swimming, Wei Soong remains committed to the sport. He remains humble and focused, reminding himself of his purpose and the tasks left to accomplish. With his unwavering determination and inspiring attitude, there is no doubt that Wei Soong will continue to make a significant impact in the world of para swimming.
