In Dubai, a laborer received a compensation of AED 70,000 following a workplace accident where he lost two of his fingers in a machinery mishap.
A 32-year-old Asian worker, who was left permanently disabled following a workplace accident, has received Dh70,000 in compensation. The incident took place at a workshop operated by Nebras Power Investment LLC in Dubai, where the worker was assigned to operate a steel-bending machine.
The accident occurred while the worker was carrying out a task on the machine. Investigations revealed that the worker had not received proper safety training or guidance before being instructed to use the machine. The court concluded that the lack of supervision and disregard for safety protocols directly led to the accident, resulting in the amputation of two fingers for the worker.
The injured worker filed a civil claim demanding Dh150,000 in damages. The Dubai Civil Court reviewed the evidence and medical reports before ordering the compensation. The court did not award the full amount demanded, instead ordering the supervisors and the company to pay Dh70,000 jointly.
In addition to the financial compensation, the Dubai Criminal Court found two Asian supervisors guilty of negligence. They were sentenced to one month in jail, with the sentence suspended for three years, and ordered to pay a fine of Dh5,000 each.
The compensation, totalling Dh70,000, is intended to cover the medical expenses and loss of earnings suffered by the worker as a result of the accident. The worker's identity has not been disclosed to protect their privacy.
This case serves as a reminder to all employers and supervisors about the importance of safety protocols and proper training in the workplace. It is crucial that workers are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary to carry out their duties safely and avoid accidents.
The worker's life has been significantly altered as a result of this accident, and while no amount of money can undo the harm caused, this compensation will help provide some financial relief during their recovery and rehabilitation.
