In the realm of World of Warcraft, the introduction of the Player Housing system could be its most significant addition in more than a decade, and not for reasons one would conventionally assume.

World of Warcraft, the top subscription-based, persistently online MMORPG, is set to enter its second decade with a bang. At Gamescom 2025, the company unveiled its next expansion, Midnight, slated for Windows PC in early 2026.

Midnight moves forward the Worldsoul Saga and rebuilds the Blood Elf lands of Quel'thalas. It includes new zones, a new playable neutral race, and a host of new features, the most exciting of which is the introduction of Player Housing.

For the first time in World of Warcraft, players will have the opportunity to pre-order Midnight and gain early access to Player Housing before the end of 2025. This feature is being developed by Blizzard Entertainment and forms part of the upcoming expansion.

In Player Housing, players can curate and customise their own dwellings, snapping objects seamlessly into place. The system could potentially allow players to create mini gauntlets similar to Torghast or even give players the tools to create their own Brawler's Guild solo events.

The potential expansion of Player Housing could also create low-stakes, lore-friendly events with fun rewards. It could open up a new market for World of Warcraft, appealing to players who enjoy titles like Animal Crossing or The Sims.

Blizzard is hinting at potential expansions for the Player Housing system in World of Warcraft. They could potentially allow players to create and publish their own dungeons, quests, and events. This could follow the footsteps of successful games with user-generated content (UGC) components, such as Mario Maker and Roblox.

Microsoft's Gears of War 5 provides an example of a similar UGC system, where players can create gauntlets using a tile-based level design system.

However, Blizzard could have final say on what gets made public to keep things lore consistent. There are ways in WoW lore to circumnavigate story implications.

Paying subscribers of World of Warcraft can look forward to regular content updates, including new dungeons, quests, and story beats, in addition to the Player Housing feature. Midnight is set to be another exciting chapter in the long-running MMORPG's history.
