Indian Students Take Lead as Largest International Student Cohort in Germany for a Second Year Running Against Chinese Students

In the second consecutive year, Indian students surpass Chinese students to become the largest foreign student group in Germany.

In a noteworthy development, India has surpassed China to become the largest source of international students in Germany for the second consecutive year. This significant shift is a testament to both India's growing global ambitions among students and Germany's increasing position as a learning center.

The surge in Indian students studying in Germany is evident in the numbers. In the 2022-23 academic year, there were close to 43,000 Indian students in Germany, a marked increase from just over 20,800 in 2018-19. This trend continued in the 2023-24 winter semester, with 49,483 Indian students enrolled, representing a 15.1% increase compared to the previous year.

Financial considerations often play a significant role in students' decisions to study abroad. For many Indian students, Germany's free education system is a "gamechanger" that offers a more financially viable option for higher education. Kartik Trivedi, a student at Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule (OTH) Regensburg, is one such example. He chose Germany for its financial stability and world-class engineering education.

The quality of education in Germany is another draw for international students. Germany's excellence in natural sciences, engineering, and technology is well-recognised, making it an attractive destination for students like Darshak Patel, a student at Technische Universität Chemnitz, who chose Germany for its quality education, industry links, and practical nature of hands-on experience.

Vasudha Kunjir, a Master's student at TU Chemnitz, was also drawn to Germany by its mix of research strength and industrial ties. She found that Germany's public universities, which provide free education, offer a unique opportunity for students to pursue higher education without the burden of high tuition fees.

The majority of programs in Germany are conducted in English, making them accessible to international students. This linguistic diversity, combined with Germany's reputation as a global learning hub, has contributed to its growing popularity among international students.

As the number of Indian students in Germany continues to rise, so too does Germany's position as a destination for high-quality, affordable education. This trend is expected to continue, with many more Indian students likely to choose Germany for their higher education in the years to come.
