In Turkey, the EU offers €20 million in humanitarian aid to support disadvantaged refugees

The European Union has announced a significant humanitarian aid package of €20 million for refugees in Turkey, primarily those affected by the 2023 earthquake. This aid will be delivered in close cooperation with Turkish authorities, with the distribution coordinated by them.

The aid is intended for vulnerable refugees living in Turkey, focusing on providing essential services such as protection, health, water, sanitation, and education. It is expected to cater to a diverse range of refugee groups with varying needs, including those who have limited to no access to government services.

Approximately 3 million registered refugees are currently hosted in the country, primarily from Syria, but also from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran. The aid will not be limited to registered refugees only, and it will also be directed towards refugees and migrant groups with specific needs.

The European Union is working with partners to distribute the aid, with the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO) of the European Commission managing the EU-provided aid funds in Turkey. DG ECHO finances aid operations through a network of partners, including NGOs and international organizations, but does not typically implement aid programs directly.

The aid is aimed at improving the living conditions of refugees in Turkey and will be used to address their basic needs, including protection, health, water and sanitation, and education in emergencies. The European Union's commitment to this cause is a testament to its dedication to supporting the most vulnerable populations in times of crisis.
