Increase in Afghan asylum applications post ECJ verdict
In August 2021, Germany saw a significant number of asylum applications, with Afghanistan, Syria, and Turkey being the most common countries of origin.
According to the latest data, Afghanistan led with 1,968 applicants, followed closely by Syria with 1,370 applicants, and Turkey with 848 applicants. This marked a decrease in the number of initial asylum applications compared to the same month the previous year, with a total of 7,803 applications received in August 2021, a decrease of 5.9 percent compared to July.
Interestingly, among the initial applications, Afghans submitted 14,865 applications, while they submitted 15,914 follow-up applications. This suggests that a significant number of asylum seekers from Afghanistan have already had their initial applications processed.
In a landmark ruling last October, the European Court of Justice determined that some discriminatory measures taken by the Taliban against women in Afghanistan constitute persecution. As a result, 9,139 follow-up applications were submitted by Afghan women in the first eight months of 2021.
Turkey ranked third for the main country of origin for initial asylum applications, while Syria ranked second. It is important to note that follow-up applications are filed when there is a change in the legal situation, new evidence supporting their need for protection, or when the situation in their home country deteriorates.
As of August 2021, a total of 104,012 asylum applications were received in Germany, with 78,246 being initial applications. Among these, Afghans accounted for the most applications, with a total of 104,012 applications, and 20,779 being follow-up applications.
Meanwhile, in the city of Hamm, there were multiple news updates unrelated to asylum applications or their statistics. These included a memorial for NS victims at the Former OLG Hamm, the return of the Giant Rooks, and the reopening of Werler Street after a water main break. These updates can be found on a specific news platform.
In conclusion, the number of asylum seekers in Germany continues to be a significant issue, with Afghanistan, Syria, and Turkey being the most common countries of origin in August 2021. The ruling by the European Court of Justice has led to an increase in follow-up applications from Afghan women, highlighting the ongoing need for protection and support for those fleeing persecution.
