Increase in false lottery winnings frauds, Florida Lottery issues alert
No Bullshit Guide to Spotting and Reporting Florida Lottery Scams
Take note of these warning signs and don't fall victim to lottery scams in the Sunshine State.
How to Recognize Florida Lottery Scams
Scammers are cunning, frequently posing as representatives from Powerball or Mega Millions and phoning or messaging you with fabricated tales of a massive lottery win. These fraudsters often demand "taxes," "processing fees," or other financial charges in order to claim your phony prize. Be aware that they may also request sensitive personal information like your Social Security number, bank details, or other financial data.
It's essential to know that the Florida Lottery will NEVER contact winners by phone, text, social media, or email to notify them of a prize. They also NEVER require payment or personal information to claim winnings. Legitimate lottery winnings must be claimed IN PERSON at one of its offices or by mail with a VALID WINNING TICKET. If the call or message demands money or personal info, it's most likely a goddamn scam.
What to Do if You Encounter a Lottery Scam
Don't hesitate, hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call or message. Don't provide any personal or financial information. Just say "no" and cut off contact.
You should also NEVER pay any fees or disclose your Social Security number or bank details, even if it seems legitimate.
Don't let your hard-earned money or personal information fall into the wrong hands. Report the scam to the Florida Lottery’s Division of Security by calling (850) 487-7730.
You can also report the scam to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at 1-800-HELP-FLA (1-800-435-7352).

Remember that the Florida Lottery Secretary, John F. Davis, has emphasized that these scams are harmful and misleading, urging all Florida residents to stay alert and act swiftly against any suspicious activity[1][2][3][4][5].
So, if you receive an unsolicited message claiming you won a lottery and asking for money or personal information, consider it a scam and report it right away to the appropriate authorities in Florida. Don't become the next victim!
