In Switzerland, the cost of everyday goods has seen a significant drop, according to recent data. For the 11th month in a row, inflation figures have remained below 1 percent, with July 2025 seeing an average decrease of 0.2 percent compared to the previous year.

The decrease in prices is most noticeable in certain categories. Electrical appliances for personal care have reduced by 7 percent, while toys and hobby items have become 5.8 percent cheaper. Small household appliances have also seen a substantial drop, with prices decreasing by 9.6 percent. Travel goods and accessories, as well as toys, have followed suit, with decreases of 5.6 percent and 5.8 percent respectively.

Air transport prices have also taken a dip, with a drop of 6.4 percent. This is reflected in the prices of flights, with a round-trip ticket from Zurich to New York costing 398 francs, to Washington DC, 395 francs, and to Boston, 393 francs. A flight to Los Angeles is priced at 465 francs, and to San Francisco, 401 francs.

The appreciation of the Swiss franc, due to the Swiss National Bank's interest rate policy and foreign exchange sales, has played a significant role in reducing the price of imported goods from abroad.

However, not all goods have seen a price decline. Coffee prices have risen by 8 percent, and the price of chocolate has jumped steeply by 17.7 percent since July 2023. Luxury Swiss watches, especially models with Tourbillon mechanisms, and Swiss gold products such as refined gold, which play a crucial role in the global gold trade, also tend to have much higher prices and are not included in the report.

The sharp drop in demand for SWISS airline is attributed to the "Trump effect." The airline is experiencing a decline in popularity, which has been reflected in the prices of its flights.

Interestingly, the price decline is most pronounced for low-income households, with a drop of 0.4 percent. By region, the German-speaking areas have recorded a 0.2 percent drop, while the decrease was 0.3 percent in other cantons.

Many government-administered prices have ensured comparatively low inflation in Switzerland. However, increases in certain areas such as car insurance prices (up by 11 percent) and packaging costs, according to a study, have contributed to the overall price rise in some goods and services. The wealthiest households, on the other hand, have seen almost no change in price decline.

Despite the overall price decline, it is important to note that prices in the eurozone have risen by an estimated 2 percent. This discrepancy highlights the unique economic situation of Switzerland in comparison to its neighbours.
