The German Insurance Association (GDV) has made a significant announcement that could affect approximately 420,000 drivers in Berlin. The association has raised Berlin's rating in the regional classes for partial coverage, moving the city to the 12th level out of 16.

This change, which will take effect next year, is a response to the higher number of motor vehicle accidents in Berlin compared to the rest of Germany. The GDV attributes this increase to the higher traffic density in large cities, such as Berlin.

As a result, many insurers in Berlin, including Allianz, HUK-Coburg, and some regional providers, have announced plans to increase premiums for drivers with partial coverage. This means that around 420,000 Berliners with partial coverage will move to a higher regional class next year, potentially leading to increased insurance contributions.

Comprehensive insurance, which includes payouts for self-inflicted accidents and other comprehensive damage cases, is not exempt from these changes. These comprehensive damage cases may include car thefts, glass damage, vehicle fires, wildlife collisions, or damage from natural events.

In the case of liability insurance, insurance payouts for injured third parties in traffic accidents are the main factor. Berlin has been at the highest level for both full coverage and liability insurance for some time. However, with the increase in accidents, it seems that this status may change in the near future.

The GDV emphasises that this change is not a reflection of the quality of driving in Berlin but rather the reality of the higher accident rate in large cities. They encourage drivers to remain vigilant and practice safe driving habits to minimise the risk of accidents and potential premium increases.
